sag pit
grate in the centre.
water drains perpendicular to street

right handed pit
water drains along street to right

Sag pit  is the one to watch out for. It means there is a pipe heading off into private properties, sometimes both up and downstream

To verify, for $20 buy a copy of the deposited plan and look for the easement
